The Origins of Nowruz
Nowruz, which literally means new day in Persian, is believed to have originated in the Persian Empire. Historical records suggest that the festival has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is deeply embedded in the rituals and traditions of the Zoroastrian religion. Today, Nowruz is celebrated by over 300 million people worldwide, particularly in countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and by Kurdish communities.
How is Nowruz Celebrated?
The celebration of Nowruz is rich in symbolism and tradition. Preparations for Nowruz begin weeks in advance, with a major spring-cleaning of homes known as khouneh tekouni which means ‘shaking the house’. This is done to welcome the new year with a fresh start. Another pivotal tradition is the setting of the Haft-Seen table, which includes seven items starting with the letter ‘S’ in the Persian alphabet. These items symbolize rebirth, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, patience, and beauty.
Families gather to observe the exact moment of the spring equinox, marking the start of the new year. They exchange gifts, share meals, and participate in communal celebrations that often include music, dancing, and public festivals. The festivities extend over two weeks, culminating in Sizdah Bedar, a day dedicated to spending time in nature.
International Recognition
In 2009, the United Nations officially recognized March 21st as the International Day of Nowruz, highlighting the cultural significance of this ancient festival as a beacon of peace and solidarity.
